Michelle Gilmore, Senior Program Manager for SMART (Start Making A Reader Today), will be at our meeting on February 11 to tell us about the SMART program and our local volunteer opportunities. She is looking for volunteers to read one-on-one with prekindergarten through third-grade students for one hour a week at Highland Church Albina Head Start, Bridger K-8, or Vestal Elementary. The Montavilla Food Cooperative started in 2010 as a simple idea to bring the kind of food we wanted to buy year-round to the Montavilla neighborhood. Since that time, we have been building community support through memberships and engagement, and we are excited at the prospect of opening a cooperatively owned grocery store in Montavilla!  This month, representatives from the MFC Board will be presenting a brief overview of the organization and it's highlights from 2018 and plans for the coming year. 


Also: We are looking for volunteers to serve on the MNA Board of Directors!

At our October meeting, we’re talking historic resources!

Brandon Spencer-Hartle, Historic Resources Program Manager at the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, will share exciting news about possible City funding for a historic resources survey of the Montavilla main street area.

In March, MNA asked City Council to prioritize Montavilla for the long-awaited update to the citywide Historic Resources Inventory. In response, the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability has identified resources to document potential historic resources in Montavilla in early 2019.

Brandon will talk about the survey and inventory process, what it means for Montavilla, and how the neighborhood can engage in the project. Brandon will also talk about upcoming amendments to the historic resources chapters of the zoning code.

Land Use and Transportation Committee Meeting

When: Wednesday, September 26, from 6:30 - 8:00 pm

We've got two guests coming to talk about development projects around the neighborhood:

  • Morgan Randis, Smart Foodservice, about the new Cash & Carry going up on the Chinese Village site; and

  • Anna Mackay, Guerilla Development, on the adaptive reuse of an old service station at NE 70th and NE Glisan (rendering above). Guerilla is responsible for several innovative projects around town, including Burnside's Rocket restaurant, the Zipper, and the Fair-Haired Dumbell.

We'll also be checking in about the zoning changes that have taken place in the neighborhood from Commercial to Employment designations, and talk about next steps for our public art projects. Open to all - we hope you'll join us!
