Keeping Montavilla Clean

Montavilla has seen an increase in litter. As a community, we can help clean up the neighborhood, and hopefully, the clean streets will inspire people to properly dispose of their trash. MNA is looking to coordinate volunteers with cleanup efforts. We will offer safety instruction, communication, and supplies for cleanups through AdoptOneBlock.

If you are interested in joining the cleanup efforts or just want more information, please fill out this form:

On the form you can signup to receive more information about the program or Join the email list. We communicate through email about group cleanup activities and direct people to partner businesses offering dumpster space.

THank You to Our Sponsors

Several local businesses and organizations are helping our cleanup effort by donating cleanup kits or providing dumpster space for collected trash. We are always looking for new sponsors. Please Email jacob@montavillapdx.org if you can help.

When collecting trash from the streets, safety is your first concern. You should create a special cleanup kit that has all the tools to make it a good experience. Here are links to a recommended trash grabber and sharps container. These are similar to the ones provided in our free cleanup Kit. If you are looking to build a cart similar to the one pictured Home Depot sells the Hand Truck and a 32 Gallon Trash Can.

What a basic cleanup kit should look like

pickup-kit.jpeg

1. Trash pickup grabbers. Treat all trash as if it were a dangerous snake. Keep it away from your body and never use your hands to bag it. Grabbers will keep you clean and safe.

2. A sharps container should be with you as you collect trash. It is illegal to put a syringe in the trash. The best kind of biohazard collection devices have a tilting lid to drop needles into the container and prevent items from falling out. Never use your hands to pickup a needle. Grabbers only.

3. It is best to use a trash can with wheels, or a container on a hand-truck. A trash bag will become heavy as you walk around. Inevitably a bag will brush up against you when you walk. Sharp and dirty items may be inside the bag and poke through. Using a bag inside of a can helps protect you from strain and potential cuts or puncture.

Needle Drop Box

It's against the law to throw syringes in the garbage. Instead, drop discarded syringes and sharps containers at the free 24-hour sharps drop box near the Gateway Transit Center at NE Multnomah and 99th Ave.
